Paeonia lactiflora, the species, growing in the Japanese Woodland at the US National Arboretum
This species is the basis for most of our Chinese herbaceous cultivars. Many are quite colorful with a vast proliferation of petals. The species itself has a simple beauty.

It drives me crazy that in Oregon so often Peony blooms get trounced in the rain. Maybe in the future I will be brave enough to own one though.
